i (MAXINE GAMBREL, GRANDDAUGHTER OF MINNIE ALMA BREEDLOVE CURRY) GREW UP AROUND THE 5 LISTED BELOW.

MINNIE ALMA BREEDLOVE CURRY( 1868/1944) (MY GRANDMOTHER) WAS SAID BY ONE OF MY COUSINS TO BE A VERY INTELLIGENT WOMAN.  SHE WAS WELL VERSED IN POLITICS AND RELIGION.  SHE WAS TINY IN STATURE AND AT HER OLDEST HAD AUBURN HAIR WITH ONE STREAK OF GREY DOWN THE CENTER.    MY GRANDFATHER PASSED 2 YEARS BEFORE I WAS BORN.  SHE AND MY GRANDFATHER (DAVID CURRY) PURCHASED 104 ACRES IN MORAL TOWNSHIP, SHELBY COUNTY WHERE MY PARENTS LIVED.  PART OF THAT FARM REMAINS IN THE FAMILY TODAY.  MY GRANDMOTHER WAS STRICT IN HER FAITH, SHE WOULD NOT ALLOW CARD PLAYING OR ALCOHOL.  SHE STRONGLY BELIEVED YOU SHOULD NOT ACCEPT ANY MONETARY RELIEF IF YOU HAD NOT WORKED OR LABORED FOR IT.  SHE RAISED CHICKENS AND I CAN REMEMBER BEING EXTREMELY CONCERNED DURING STORMS AS SHE WOULD CHECK ON HER CHICKENS TO BE SURE THEY WERE SAFE.  SHE WAS AN AVID COOK.  SHE LOVED BAKING PIES.  I REMEMBER SHE COULD BALANCE A PIE ON ONE HAND, SPIN IT WITH THE OTHER AND CUT THE EXCESS DOUGH!  I LOVED BAKING PIES BUT WAS NEVER ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH THIS FEAT.  WE ALSO RAISED HOGS ON THE FARM AND HAD A SMOKE HOUSE WHERE MEAT WAS HUNG TO CURE.  i TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THIS HOUSE AND SOMETIMES HID THERE AS A YOUTH.  SHE PASSED IN 1944.

SALLIE BREEDLOVE (AUNT SALLIE 1865/1956) WAS THE OLDEST, NEVER MARRIED.  SHE DID HAVE A RING.  THE STORY WAS TOLD THAT SOMEONE CAME TO THE FARM LOOKING FOR A JOB AND WAS HIRED.  EVIDENTLY A FRIENSHIP WAS FORMED BUT NOTHING ELSE.  MANY REUNIONS WERE HELD AROUND HER BIRTHDAY (SEPT. 20).  OUR HOUSE WAS HEATED BY A WOOD STOVE, SO MY PARENTS WOULD BRING HER TO OUR HOUSE DURING THE WINTER MONTHS UNTIL 1955.  SUGAR CREEK CHURCH WAS JUST DOWN THE ROAD AND SHE WOULD ALWAYS WALK OR WE WOULD PICK HER UP.  I REMEMBER SHE ALWAYS HAD TO SHAKE HANDS WITH THE MINISTER AFTER THE SERVICE.  IF SHE FORGOT, SHE WOULD HAVE TO GO BACK IN BEFORE GOING HOME.

SHE PASSED IN 1956.

GEORGE BREEDLOVE  (1870/1951) UNCLE GEORGE WAS A COLORFUL CHARACTER.  ALWAYS FUN TO BE AROUND.  I REMEMBER SITTING ON THE FRONT PORCH AND SEEING HIM WALK DOWN THE ROAD TO OUR HOUSE.  HE HAD RODE THE BUS FROM INDIANAPOLIS TO HELP WITH CERTAIN FARM ACTIVITIES SUCH AS CUTTING OR BAILING HAY.  I LOVED WORKING IN THE FIELD BY MY MOTHER HESITATED TO ALLOW ME TO BE AROUND FOUL LANGUAGE SO I COULD NOT HELP UNTIL UNCLE GEORGE PROMISED TO TAKE CARE OF ME.

I WOULD BE THE WATER GIRL!

HARVEY BREEDLOVE(1873) LIVED IN SHELBYVILLE.  HE WAS LEGALLY BLIND AND USED A WHITE CANE TO GET AROUND.  TO MAKE A PHONE CALL, HE WOULD CALL THE OPERATOR AND SHE WOULD MAKE THE CALL FOR HIM.  HE WAS QUITE ACTIVE.  HE RAN FOR OFFICE OF THE TRUSTEE EARLIER.  HE DID NOT LET HIS HANDICAP STOP HIM FROM ACTIVITIES.

BYNUM (1897)  HE LIVED WITH AUNT SALLIE.  HE WAS QUITE A CHARACTER.  HE DID TAKE CARE OF THE ANIMALS (COWS MAINLY) BUT HE SWORE QUITE REGULARLY WHICH AUNT SALLIE DID NOT LIKE.   SHE DID NOT SAY ANYTHING, BUT YOU COULD HEAR HER TSK... UNDER HER BREATH!  HE WOULD OCCASIONALLY GO TO ONE OF HIS GIRLS TO STAY.   MY MOTHER WIOULD GET HIS DIRTY CLOTHES AND WASH THEM.   OCCASIONALLY MY GRANDMOTHER AND I WOULD GO WITH HIM TO STAY AS WELL.

I REALIZE NOW HOW IMPORTANT THIS PART OF MY LIFE AND GROWING UP WAS!  NOW THAT I AM A 'GRANDMOTHER' AND CAN USE THOSE EXPERIENCES.
